AHG Badge Helps – Our Constitution #1

Our Constitution

This summer has renewed my love for teaching. Between summer camp, badge bashes and day camp, I have had plenty of opportunities.  In preparing to teach the classes, I am learning a ton! Hopefully some of the resources I found will help you.

Our Constitution is one of the newer AHG badges.  In my opinion, it is a pretty tough badge to earn especially at the Pioneer / Patriot level.  But it is very important that we learn the history of our country.  Continue reading “AHG Badge Helps – Our Constitution #1”

AHG Badge Help – Living in the USA #28

Are you familiar with the Morrill Act of 1862?  Whether or not you have ever heard of it or not, I am certain it affects your life in some way, either directly or indirectly.

Congressman Justin Morrill, from Vermont, sponsored what we know refer to as the Morrill Act or what some refer to as the Morrill Land Grant College Act.  The Act was signed into law by President Lincoln on July 2, 1862.  This piece of legislation provided each state with 30,000 acres of Federal land for each member of their Congressional delegation.  The states that accepted this land, were to sell the land and use the funds for public colleges that focused on agriculture and mechanical arts.  Sixty-nine colleges were formed because of the Morrill Act of 1862. AHG Badge Help – Living in the USA #12

Well now that it is spring, it means one thing to AHG leaders – time to plan summer activities.  Summer camp is one of the few times each year that I am still active in teaching badge classes.  In addition to being able to pour my heart into something I love, I am generating a ton of AHG related blog post ideas that I will be sharing with you.

The Living in the USA badge focuses on our individual states and the its uniqueness.  Requirement #12 looks at famous citizens from your state, including the ones placed in the National Statuary Hall.

A trip to Washington D.C. is full of potential learning and should be included on everyone’s bucket list.  Inside the US Capitol is a collection of statues. Each state has donated two statues to represent them.

For more information about them check out the the Architect of the Capitol website at www.aoc.gov

NOTE: The requirements have been simplified here. Please be sure to read the full text in the American Heritage Girl Handbook to make sure you fully understand the requirements.
