Are you familiar with the Morrill Act of 1862? Whether or not you have ever heard of it or not, I am certain it affects your life in some way, either directly or indirectly.
Congressman Justin Morrill, from Vermont, sponsored what we know refer to as the Morrill Act or what some refer to as the Morrill Land Grant College Act. The Act was signed into law by President Lincoln on July 2, 1862. This piece of legislation provided each state with 30,000 acres of Federal land for each member of their Congressional delegation. The states that accepted this land, were to sell the land and use the funds for public colleges that focused on agriculture and mechanical arts. Sixty-nine colleges were formed because of the Morrill Act of 1862.
