Musical Cupcakes

Did you know that you can make your own sprinkles?  And because you make them yourself, you can customize the color to match any theme.  No more searching for perfect sprinkles, just make them yourself.

These cupcakes were made for my daughter’s July piano recital.  I wanted them to be a little patriotic, but still maintain the musical theme. I knew I would never be able to create the exact shade of red and blue to match store bought sprinkles, so I made my own.

Step one: Make a batch of royal icing and color (I did half red and half blue).

Step two: Using a number 10 piping tip, pipe music notes on parchment paper and allow to dry.

Step three:  Cover the back side of a cookie pan with wax paper. Using tip number 2, pipe a series of lines.

Step four: After the lines have dried, cut them with a sharp knife into little pieces.

Step five: Add the royal icing pieces to the top of pre-frosted cupcakes.

TIPS: It’s okay if the lines are not perfectly straight. or if there are gaps, just place as many lines as you can, as close as you can.
