American Heritage Girls Merit Badges

I love being part of American Heritage Girls. My daughter also loves it. As soon as we learned that we were moving she wanted to know if there was a troop near us. Thankfully the answer is yes.

However, I have found that they are lacking one thing. Before you worry, let me explain. My son is a Life Scout. He has 5 merit badges and a service project to complete before he is eligible for his Eagle.  We are very proud of him. There is a great free resource available to Boy Scouts – www.MeritBadge.org. They provide worksheets to accompany every merit badge. As a mom, I wish there were some for American Heritage Girls merit badges.

As a Troop Coordinator in Texas, I made worksheets to help parents with some of the requirements.  I did not complete entire merit badges, but rather tackled some random requirements.  Most of them were for Tenderhearts. As the mom of an Explorer I have began to create worksheets for some of the requirements that Lily is working on. My husband, recommended I share them with you thinking that other parents maybe looking for same thing and there is no need to re-invent the wheel.

If you are a regular follower that enjoys my knitting, cooking and other projects, don’t worry they will continue. However, I am adding a new tab at the top of the page.

Before February is over, I wanted to share one last Valentine’s Day idea with you. While I realize that you will not need the idea any time soon, maybe you could pin it unto Pinterest so you can find it next year when you do need it. Or maybe you will find it while searching the internet.

My daughter’s AHG troop exchanged Valentine’s within her unit. We loved this, for as a homeschooler we have not regularly exchanged Valentine’s among friends and classmates. Instead of the regular store-bought cheesy cards, we opted to make some. In my search I have found several ideas that involved wrapping a box of confectionary hearts but none of them seemed right for us. So I was determined to make one that she liked.

Sugar on a stick

Last year for the AHG Father/Daughter Dance I made chocolate covered marshmallows. This year our new troop in Florida also had a Father/Daughter Dance. Each family was asked to bring something to share. I asked my  husband what he wanted and HE picked chocolate covered marshmallows. However, I hate to do the same thing twice…

Keep Calm and Carry a Backpack

Include in your essential list of items for summer camp is a backpack. Every camper needs a small bag to throw over their shoulder to carry their stuff around during the day.

I have to admit this was not one of my SWAPS, but rather it was my daughters. She too has just learned to knit and wanted to hand knit all of her SWAPS for camp. What began as a simple square developed into a cute SWAPS. I must admit she worked a lot harder to complete this than I did on all of mine combined. However, I think they are absolutely adorable and she was able to make them with all the left over yarn I had piled up.

The knitting itself was quite easy. Just cast on 6 stitches using a long tail cast on, then knit 5 rows and cast off leaving a tail of several inches.  Using a yarn needle the tail were brought to the opposite side and tied with a square knot to create the straps of the back pack. The tags were printed on card stock and attached to each piece. A copy of the tag is below for your use.

My friend the sock monkey

I have fallen in love with sock monkeys, and apparently I am not the only one. I never had a sock monkey as a child, but now that I am all grown up (don’t laugh so loud) I wish I had one. The last SWAPS I made for summer camp was a sock monkey friend. It was by far the most popular SWAPS I made, and quite a few people, including adults, came up to me and asked for one.

Like all of the other SWAPS I made it was super easy. It began with a piece of 12×12 scrap booking paper. All I had to do was cut them out and drop them into a 2×3 zipper bag. My wonderful hubby wrote the poem for me. So I printed them and attached them to the top of the bag with a zipper before adding the safety-pin.
