Floating around Facebook, I saw a shout out for knitters. The Oklahoma Department of Health is asking for hand knit (or crocheted) purple baby hats. They want to give each baby born during the winter months a purple hat to help bring awareness to the Period of Purple Crying and to Shaken Baby Syndrome.
Researchers have found that for some unknown reason, babies go through a phase of excessive crying that peaks around 2 months of age. During this phase, some new parents become frustrated, leading to Shaken Baby Syndrome. To learn more visit here.
Through a little online research I have learned that this is a national campaign that is available in 15 states. To find a hospital accepting donations visit the Click for Babies website here. They also have the guidelines for donations and free patterns.
How fitting, that while our Creator was knitting each baby together, that I had the privilege to knit for them.
For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Psalm 139:13
Not only did I knit for them, I also prayed for them. I prayed for a safe delivery for both the mom and baby. I prayed that God would put people into their lives that would ultimately bring them to a relationship with Christ. And that these tiny babies would have the strength to stand against the evil in the world and make the world a better place.
I know that all of my knitting friends have an abundant stash of yarn. There is still time to whip up a few purple hats before the deadline. My next several posts will be devoted to purple baby hats.
To all my non-knitting friends, don’t worry. I will have more non-knitting posts in the near future.
