Hamburger Vegetable Soup

For all you foodies out there, yesterday was National Homemade Soup Day. On a cold winter day, nothing is better than a bowl of homemade soup.

A family favorite around my house is Hamburger Vegetable Soup. It has enough meat to keep the hubby happy and lots of vegetables (carrots, corn, green beans, peas, and celery). I love the recipe because I can throw it in the slow-cooker and have dinner on the table when the hubby gets home from work.

HAMBURGER VEGETABLE SOUP

1 lb. of ground beef – browned

2 cups water

6 beef bouillon cubes

1 large can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes

1 small onion diced

1/2 cup diced celery

1 10oz package of frozen mixed vegetables

1 clove of garlic minced

1 teaspoon of oregano

1/8 teaspoon of pepper

Dissolve bouillon in water. Add all ingredients to slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 5 hours.

The next time the weather is cold and rainy, mix up a batch of Hamburger Vegetable Soup and stay warm.

Here is the recipe card (Hamburger Vegetable Soup)  to add to your collection.

February Dishcloth

As I shared in January, my goal for Christmas 2014 is to make several sets of dishcloths to give as gifts. Each set will have 12 dishcloths, one for each month. Instead of waiting till the end of the year to work on the project, I plan to knit a few each month so that by December, they will be complete. Well, enough rambling, here is the February installment of the set.

Heart dishcloth - 1

This pattern was designed by Emily Jagos and can be found here for free.

As always I used my size 6 needles so my finished project was a little smaller (8 inches x 8 inches). I choose “Bright Pink” by Peaches and Creme. I like the edging on this dishcloth. So often, dishcloths with images to not have much texture and this one solves that problem by adding a little extra texture around the edge.

Happy knitting!

Personalized Pillowcase

As I shared in November, Lily wanted purple zebra room. She also wanted LOTS of pillows on her bed. Have you priced pillows lately? Well I was not thrilled at what I found, so I decided to get crafty.

Pillow

We had an extra pillow case that came with a set of sheets, so I claimed it and with less less than $1.50, I was able to make this for her.

At the craft store I purchased a sheet of zebra print felt ($0.99) and one-forth of a yard of light weight Wonder Under ($0.37 on sale). I only used about half of the Wonder Under but knew I could use it for other projects.

When I came home I ironed the Wonder Under to the felt according to the directions on the package, being careful not to melt the felt. Then using my Cricut I cut letters from the felt. This was only partially successful and did not cut the letters all the way through. So I used a pair of sharp scissors to finish cutting the letters.  I then used the iron to attach the letters to the pillow case.

If/when I do this again, I will print the letters on regular paper in a large font and use the paper letters as a pattern to cut the felt letters. Also, I used the full piece of felt with little waste. If you have more letters additional sheets of felt would be needed.

If you like zebra print check out the matching dish I made for her dresser here.

Let’s Build a Snowman

Last week I admitted I have an obsession with snowmen (here). Living in Florida we will not be building any snowmen any time soon, but many of you are living in snow-covered areas. When I saw “Build a Snowman Kit” on Pinterest I knew I had to make one. Thankfully, my sister lives in an area that does get snow.

Build a snowman(Please excuse the box “snowman head”, Florida does not get much snow).

The kit was easy to make but I could not get the words to “Frosty the Snowman” out of my head. Corn-cob pipes are not politically correct but I did keep the eyes made out of coal. I guess the buttons could also be for a nose, but I think the carrot is more traditional. I included two scarves and two sets of buttons to allow for some variety.
