Dream Big

Recently our AHG troop had a lock-in centered around the book Frieda B. Herself by Renata Bowers. Frieda B. is a young girl with a big imagination, and she is a big dreamer. She shows us that we too can dream big. And God can use those dreams to bless others.  To learn more about Frieda B, check out her website here.

But I digress… here is the SWAP we made for the night.

If you would like to make this SWAP, it is super easy. Begin by printing the file below and cut along the solid line.  Fold each piece of paper in half and write your name and troop number on the blank section (which will become the back of the SWAP). Then place a single cotton ball in a 2×3 inch jewelry bag. Attach the paper header with a staple and add a safety pin.

Let’s Band Together SWAP

Does this sound familiar?  In the dark corner of my daughter’s bedroom is a plastic box full of little tiny rubber bands that she must have to make another Band-a-loom bracelet because the last 50 we made are not enough. Somehow between then and now they have been forgotten. Do you wish you could find something to do with them? My daughter decided to use her stash to make SWAPS for camp.

Rosie the Riveter

This year Lily and I attended our area’s AHG Day Camp.  It was a great experience, as are most AHG events. Our theme was World War 2.  One of the local Patriots developed the camp. I learned so much about this time in history in preparing to lead on of the groups.

I have the Rosie the Riveter song stuck in my head. I had always seen the propaganda poster for Rosie the Riveter and her “Can Do” attitude. Little did I know that the term Rosie the Riveter first appeared in a song written by Redd Evans and John Jacob Loeb.

As I have said before, I love making SWAPS.

I spent quite a bit of time searching for a World War 2 themed SWAP with no success, so I know I had to create one.  I altered the iconic picture to read “AHG Can Do It”. Then I added a scrap of red and white dotted fabric (similar to the headband Rosie wears) and added a pin.

If you would like to make this SWAP, all you need to do is print this Rosie the Riveter SWAP on card stock and add a safety-pin and fabric swatch (optional).  Don’t forget to write your name and troop number on the back.

Keep Calm and Carry a Backpack

Include in your essential list of items for summer camp is a backpack. Every camper needs a small bag to throw over their shoulder to carry their stuff around during the day.

I have to admit this was not one of my SWAPS, but rather it was my daughters. She too has just learned to knit and wanted to hand knit all of her SWAPS for camp. What began as a simple square developed into a cute SWAPS. I must admit she worked a lot harder to complete this than I did on all of mine combined. However, I think they are absolutely adorable and she was able to make them with all the left over yarn I had piled up.

The knitting itself was quite easy. Just cast on 6 stitches using a long tail cast on, then knit 5 rows and cast off leaving a tail of several inches.  Using a yarn needle the tail were brought to the opposite side and tied with a square knot to create the straps of the back pack. The tags were printed on card stock and attached to each piece. A copy of the tag is below for your use.

Note: the backpack did not open but were more like flat rectangles with loops.
