Well, here it is the last Friday in February. The new year is already slipping away. Before we know it, spring will be here. But instead of borrowing trouble from tomorrow, I am going to focus on today. I set out to write a series of posts for the Freedom Seekers Merit Badge. I have already posted merit badge helps for the Tenderhearts and Explorers, and don’t want the PiPa’s to feel left out.
Today we are looking at Requirement #16 and runaway slave posters. A quick google image search will provide you with an array of posters. But I realized that it was difficult to find multiple posters in one place. I have found several digital collections that will aid you in completing this requirement.
- The New York Public Library Digital Collection (here)
- Duke University Libraries Digital Repository (here)
- Ranker’s (here)
Collectively, they include newspaper ads, wanted posters, slave auctions and help with escaped slave services.

NOTE: The requirements have been simplified here. Please be sure to read the full text in the American Heritage Girl Handbook to make sure you fully understand the requirements.
The Alabama Archives has a digital photography collection of the Civil Rights movement. Here is the link. Know you will find it most interesting. http://digital.archives.alabama.gov/cdm/search/collection/photo/searchterm/civil%20rights/field/subjec/mode/exact/conn/and/order/nosort
