We have come to the end of the hiking cupcake series. And I have been saving the best for last. Today, I want to feature the backpack and hiking stick cupcake topper.
Supplies:
- green fondant
- white fondant
- red fondant
- brown fondant
- gum paste glue
- ruffled circle cutter – 2 inch
- fondant roller
- knife
- toothpick
Step 1: Roll green fondant to about 1/4 inch thickness and cut out green circle bases for each cupcake. Set aside.
Step 2: Combine a small amount of brown and white fondant to create a marbled effect. Be careful to not overmix the colors.
Step 3: Form a hiking stick (a small round snake that is tapered at one end).
Step 4: Attach a small ball of red fondant to the top of the stick with gumpaste glue. Form a looped handle and attach it to the side. Set aside.
Step 5: Form a rectangular box from brown fondant. Create a second block that will sit on top of the first box. Set aside. Note, the edges are softened and not square to create a more realistic pack.
Step 6: Roll a piece of red fondant to about 1/8 of an inch thickness. Use a knife to cut 2 straps for each pack.
Step 7: Attach the red straps to the top and bottom of the larger box created in step 5 with gumpaste glue. Now attach the smaller block from step 5 to the top of the larger box.
Step 8: Assemble the topper by gluing the pack to the base (step 1). Lean the hiking stick against the pack. Create a small hole in the base with a toothpick to help support the stick. Place a tiny dot of gumpaste glue on the base and on the pack where the hiking stick touches. Allow to dry overnight.
Step 8: Place onto pre-frosted cupcakes and enjoy
