Family Room Makeover – part 1 Lighting

Family roomHere is a very private look into my home.  The before picture is a picture of the house before we bought it. I have said repeatedly that the house was stuck in the 80’s.

To begin I painted the walls the light gray color I have used throughout the house. I also removed the wallpaper trim. In addition, all the wood trim was painted white to brighten up the space. (You can learn more about these projects here).

Next it was time to tackle the light fixture.  Here is a picture of the original light.  Don’t you like how none of the bulbs match?

LIGHTI know that ceilings fans are not as popular as they used to be, but they are essential to all homes in the south.  Since the fan itself was in good shape, we opted to keep it and just get rid of the flowers.

In an attempt to save a little money, I had read that you can soak the glass shade in mineral spirits to remove the decorations.  This was a complete fail.  No amount of soaking or scrubbing was going to remove those flowers.  So another trip to the hardware store resulted in new globes and lightbulbs.  I opted for clear glass globes that would allow more light to shine through.  (Sorry I don’t have a picture of the new light fixture).

The next part of the room makeover, can be found here.
