Recently the kids and I took a field trip to the zoo. Now that the kids have gotten older we no longer make regular pilgrimages to the zoo. But this trip will be remembered for a very long time.
The weather was a bit nippy for January, but since the zoo was running a special $3 per person, we decided to take a break from school and join some friends at the zoo. We saw the usual zoo animals – lions, tigers and bears, Oh my! The zoo even had jaguars. I don’t recall ever seeing jaguars before this.
BUT what makes this trip memorable was the elephants. Shortly after entering the zoo, we spotted this brightly colored guy in the distance. As we approached I learned that he had been yarn bombed. I did my best to hide my excitement from the others I was with. I didn’t want them to think I was too strange.
This is the first time I have ever seen a piece of “yarn art” in person. I had heard about such things, but living in the suburbs I had never encountered one.
When I got home I learned that a group of people had decorated the elephant at the Jacksonville Zoo for the Christmas holiday season. And to my amazement, it was removed the next day. I did just barely see it.
Will this be my next crazy adventure? We will have to wait and see.
Did you know that a simple trip to the zoo, not only makes for a fun field trip, it also can count towards the AHG Zoology merit badge? Optional requirement #4 has the girls visit a local zoo. So get moving. You never know what you will discover.
