I wanted to add a scripture verse canvas for my daughter’s room. I found several on Etsy, but with prices upwards of $50 and my limited budget, I knew there had to be a better way. I decided to make one myself. However, I have terrible handwriting. Upon further research I figured out how to do it myself. I began with a large canvas (24×18) and an assortment of acrylic paints. I painted it all in cream paint. Then, I added the letter L in the background. Pictures are below the step-by-step instructions.
Step 1: Using a printer, I printed out a large letter L
Step 2: I turned the piece of paper over and shaded in the letter with a pencil. I had to go over the letter several times.
Step 3: I placed the letter right side up and colored on top of the letter I had printed.
Step 4: This allowed the pencil lead from step 2 to transfer onto the canvas. It made it like carbon paper.
Step 5: I then used white paint and a thin brush to paint the letter L.
The words of the verse were added the same way, except I used a black paint pin for the writing since it gave me a thinner, more controlled point. I used my favorite software, Microsoft Publisher, to create the printouts.
The final step was to add the border. I used painters tape to mark off the edges. I followed it up with the thin line of yellow to add a little contrast.
I loved how this project turned out. I will definitely be making more in the future.
