Cake Decorating Class for AHG – Sour Cream Cake

Previously I shared with you that I am helping a group of Tenderhearts and Explorers earn their Cake Decorating Merit Badge.

We began by going over color theory. As I explained to the girls, cake decorating is like any other type of art, it needs to be visually appealing.

Next, we made cupcakes (Requirement #1). When I make cake, I used a doctored cake mix to create a Sour Cream Cake. For, we also want it to taste great. This is my favorite white cake. It is extra moist.

SOUR CREAM CAKE
1 white box cake mix
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
a generous dash of salt
1 cup sour cream
1 cup water
3 eggs
1 Tablespoon flavoring

In a bowl, mix together dry ingredients, with a whisk.

In a separate bowl, combine wet ingredients with an electric mixer. Add 1/2 of the dry ingredients and mix well. Add the remaining dry ingredients.

Divide batter between two 8″ round prepared (greased and floured) cake pans. Bake at 300 for 20 minutes, then increase temperature to 325 and bake another 25 minutes.

TIPS: I use Pillsbury cake mix, and Lorann Princess Cake and Cookie Emulsion. The crazy cooking temperatures helps the cake to raise evenly.

NOTE: Please be sure to read the AHG Girl Handbook to make sure you fully understand the requirements.
