Camera Day

Did you know that today is Camera Day? Many of us use camera everyday, so why not take some time and work on the Photography Merit Badge.

This summer, Lily and her friends worked on this very badge. She has enjoyed learning to use my DSLR, and now prefers to use the manual setting instead of the automatic features. The group went to one of the local parks to practice what they have learned.

My favorite Explorer level requirement is number 9. The girls are to caption one of their photos with a scripture verse. Here is Lily’s picture of the trail.

We used Microsoft Publisher to add text to the photo. Then, we saved the image and had it printed at the local photo store.

Lily chose to use Jeremiah 29:11. Psalms is full of wonderful verses that can be used for this requirement. Check out these for inspiration – Psalm 19:1, Psalm 24:1, Psalm 34:8, and Psalm 145:3. If you have another great verse to use, please share it in the comments section below.

Dawn of Our Country #12

Dawn%20of%20Our%20Country%20All-thumbOur Heritage Frontier is my favorite merit badge frontier. As I have gotten older, I have fallen in love with history. As a student (even in college) I hated it. Now as a home school mom, and getting to teach history with good history books, I really enjoy it. I have learned so much teaching the kids history.

Dawn of Our Country is a great merit badge. It looks at the formation of the great county that we live in. Part of that history is the historic symbolism found in everyday objects such as our currency. Optional requirement number twelve looks at the back of a one-dollar and two-dollar bill. If you have an Explorer working on this requirement, the print-out below should help.  It provides images for them to look at along with lines for them to write on so they can easily turn their work in to their unit leader.

Home Care and Repair #17

Over spring break I spent time working around the house. The home we purchased is about 25 years old. It was owned by a lovely sweet older couple. They were in their eighties and sold this house to move into a retirement center closer to their kids. While the house is in great shape, Grandma loved wallpaper. I think I will be spending the next 3 years un-doing it.  One of the “joys” of owning a home is there is always something to do!

Home%20Care%20&%20Repair%20All-thumbOnto todays AHG related post… With all the work I am doing around the house I thought I would share Home Care and Repair Requirement #17. I am happy to say that I do my share of the work around the house, and I am not referring to just cooking and cleaning. The Home Care and Repair merit badges is a Stars and Stripes required badge. It prepares girls for future home-ownership. Requirement #17 focus on energy conservation and the principles they can use today and in the future. It works if you live in an apartment, rent or own a house. Besides the positive impact on the environment, saving energy will save  you money and we all can appreciate lower energy bills. National Pet Day and Pet Care Merit Badge

Poppy

Today is National Pet Day. During my life, I have had a wide array of pets: cats, dogs, fish, gerbil and hermit crabs.  Currently we have a dog – Poppy. She was a rescue dog we adopted about 3 years ago. She has been the best pet. She is part Chihuahua part Terrier, or so we think.

Pet Care

In recognition of National Pet Day, I thought today would be the perfect day to share AHG Pet Care merit badge requirement #5. Continue reading “National Pet Day and Pet Care Merit Badge”

Computer Fun #15

Computer FunThe first step to learning any new skill is learning the terminology associated with it.  This rule applies to crafts, cooking, school and merit badges. Computer Fun aims to teach girls fundamental computer skills.  At the Pioneer / Patriot level, girls look at the internal workings of a computer and storage.

If you are working on this merit badge, print out the worksheet below and define the terms listed.  A great resource (other than Google) is www.PC.net.  As a note to parents, there is ads on this site, but none of the ones I saw were questionable.  There is also a section on text slang and emoticons that was interesting. I have to admit, I already knew most of them and I am not always up on teenage lingo so they may not be up-to-date. Continue reading “Computer Fun #15”
