The Home Care and Repair merit badge is one of my favorites, especially at the PiPa level. However, since Lily is an Explorer, completing this badge has eluded her. She has put it off because she could not find a project to build from wood that did not involve a kit. Finally, a decision was made – a simple bench for her American Girl Doll.

Water Conservation
“Water, water, everywhere. Nor any a drop to drink.”
This famous line from Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem”The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” is known by many. We too are surrounded by water (70% of the earth’s surface), yet only a small amount is suitable for drinking. The Caring For My Environment merit badge focuses on being good stewards of the natural resources that God has given us. This goes back to the being responsible portion of the AHG Oath.
Requirement #10 has the Explorer level girls make a list of the at least 5 ways to conserve water at home. I created a simple printout for the girls to use with this requirement. (Right click on the image below to save a pdf version for your use.) Continue reading “Water Conservation”
A Camping we will go
Are you one of the AHG leaders that loves camping? Does it make your heart race to think about sitting by the campfire roasting marshmallows under the starry night sky? Or do you cringe at the thought of having dirt everywhere and trying to get the smell of smoke out of your hair and clothes? Either way outdoor skills and camping are an important part of the AHG experience.
In order for a Pioneer or Patriot to earn the Camping merit badge, which is required to complete their Stars and Stripes, they must camp for 12 nights. These begin accumulating when they cross over from Explorers. Often times the girls are working on this requirement without actually thinking about it. But it is important that records be kept so they receive credit.
I have given each girl in my unit the following handout.
Terrarium
Both of my grandmothers had green thumbs. They could grow anything. Somewhere along the way, the gene got lost. I have a black thumb.
When Lily decided to work on the Gardening and Plant Science merit badge, I knew I was in trouble. For one of her optionals, she chose to build a terrarium.
Bible Basics Merit Badge
Last week I shared with you a worksheet I created to help with the Bible Basics merit badge, requirement #11. Keeping with that theme, this week I would like to share another printout to aid in the completion of the Bible Basics badge at the Explorer level.
Hopefully, each girl spends time each day reading scripture. If they do not, now is an excellent time to form this habit. I wish I had developed this habit at a young age. Bible Basics requirement #9 has the girls spend time in scripture each day for two weeks.
This can be done by choosing a book of the bible and reading through it, or in conjunction with a devotional book. The form below has the girl record the passage of scripture they read, and what spoke to them. Continue reading “Bible Basics Merit Badge”
