Well, that didn’t work

Do you ever come across an idea and think “WOW, that would make my life a lot easier”. That is exactly what happened to me. Several times on Pinterest I have seen that you can use a can opener to open plastic packaging. So I decided to give it a try.

Don't try this

For Christmas I received a stand for my GPS, so I got out my NEW can opener (yes, I am one of those crazy people who use a manual can opener).  I began on the middle of the right side of the package. The can opener managed to make a few dents, but was not cutting the plastic.

Since that was not working I decided to try the top left corner and see if starting on a corner made any difference. This time I was able to cut a small strip off of the package, but it did not cut the seal. The next thing I know the can opener broke and fell to the floor in several pieces.

The end result was an unopened package and a broken can opener. Please do not try this at home! It was a waste of my time, energy and money. I will stick with using my heavy scissors next time I need to open anything.

Slow-cooker Chili

Brrrrr. It is cold outside! Here in Florida we will barely get above freezing. On days like today, I am thankful to be able to stay at home and not have to get out and face the elements. Yes, I know that it is colder in other parts of the country, but one month ago it was 85 and I was wearing shorts and flip-flops.  I know, I know, pull up my big girl panties and deal with it.

Now back to the topic at hand…

It is time to make something for dinner that will warm you from the inside out. I have two options for you. The first is Gumbo that was originally posted last year. I also have a new recipe for you today – Chili.  Now, I am not talking about “five-alarm” chili that burns on the way down, but a mild to medium heat chili.

Chili

This is my take on my mom’s chili. I am not sure where the recipe originally came from. Continue reading “Slow-cooker Chili”

January Dishcloth

Did you know that there is 354 days till Christmas? For us crafters it’s never to early to start thinking about Christmas.  My knitted dishcloths have been a hit, and my sweet sister even requested another set for Christmas 2015.

Via Pinterest, I found a blog post on Kathleen’s Creations blog where she donated a set of 12 dishcloths to charity, one for each month of the year. Each dishcloth was a different color and matched the month. I loved the idea so I have decided to adapt the idea to work for me.  I have been scouring the internet looking for free patterns that will make dishcloths that are the same size to create a set for Christmas 2015.

For January, I purchased a couple skeins of Robin Egg blue by Sugar ‘n Cream and knitted up a snowflake pattern by Monnibo Designs that I found on Ravelry (here). It should come as no surprise to you that I changed the border on the pattern by slipping purl-wise the first stitch of each row in order to create a smoother border. I also used a size 6 needle, instead of the size 7 she recommends.

If you are interested in the set, check back on the first Monday of each month a new pattern.

DIY Welcome Mat

As we welcome in the new year, let me welcome you into my home. Door mat

Do you realize that your front door makes a big impression on your house? Just like they say, the first impression is a lasting impression. A door mat is part of that first impression. In preparing for a new house, I also wanted a new doormat. Out with the old dirty one and in with a personalized one. But like always, price is a factor. Monogrammed doormats can be found on Amazon for $25 and more (some were over $100 – ridiculous). I was determined to find a less expensive alternative – enter another DIY project. For less than $6 (including tax) and some supplies I had on hand I now have a new doormat.

 diy Welcome Mat

I began with a plain doormat I found at IKEA for $4.99 and add some supplies I had on hand (a foam brush, acrylic paint, and some vinyl). Not pictured above is a smaller paint brush to help get into the crevices of the mat.

I used my trusty Cricut to cut a large letter B. I discarded the letter and kept the stencil. I applied the vinyl to the mat, being certain to a make sure it stuck to as many points on the woven mat as possible.

Next, I applied a coat of outdoor acrylic paint over the stencil with a foam brush. At this point I realized that the paint was sitting on the top of the mat at the high points and not getting in between the fibers very well, so I used a smaller brush. While the paint was still wet, I removed the stencil and touched up any spots that were missed.

All that was left was to let it dry and set it out at the new house.

Another year comes to a close

I have been AWOL lately. Life has once again got in the way with my blog. But have no fear, I am back. The latest move has really taken a toll on me. I managed to get everything moved, a few rooms painted and ready for Christmas.

I must admit that with only a week between the arrival of the last of our things and family arriving for Christmas, December was more hectic than usual. I got to spend a week with my dad, sister, brother-in-law, and niece. This is the first time in long while we have all been together for Christmas. While there are still lots of boxes to sort through, everything worked out. And to my nieces delight, I was able to put up the big tree this year and not “The World’s Cheapest Christmas Tree“. It was the best Christmas I have had in a long time. The old saying proved true this year, “it’s not what’s under the tree but those around it.”

As 2013 comes to a close, I cannot help but look back over the past 364 days. Last year at this time, I asked “what is it that I do best?” Obviously, this is outside of my roles as wife, mother and homeschool teacher, but what is it that I do best.  I still love to cook and my passion for that continues to grow. My interest in knitting is growing and my skills are improving. This is all due to your encouragement. Thank you for taking the time to read my post. For those who follow me, thank you!

I am excited about what the new year holds. So good bye 2013 and HELLO 2014.
