AHG Badge Help – Young Meteorologist #16

With today being the first full day of winter, I wanted to share a seasonal badge help.

Wilson Bentley became famous after he developed a method for photographing snowflakes in the late 1800’s.  During his lifetime he photographed over 5000 different snowflakes. The most startling realization was that no two snowflakes were alike, each one was unique.

“Under the microscope, I found that snowflakes were miracles of beauty; and it seemed a shame that this beauty should not be seen and appreciated by others. Every crystal was a masterpiece of design and no one design was ever repeated., When a snowflake melted, that design was forever lost. Just that much beauty was gone, without leaving any record behind.”

In Jericho, Vermont, Bentley’s home town, the Jericho Historical Society has an Exhibit dedicated to him.  On their webpage (www.snowflakebentley.com) you can find more information including a short biography, and a few of his photographs.
