Coming Unhinged

Recently while visiting my sister, I was able to help her with a project she was working on. She purchased a previously loved piano bench and was refinishing it for her husband. Originally it was “fire engine” red and had a distressed look. After stripping it and repainting it black, she was stuck with what to do with the hinges.  The previous owner had been a bit sloppy and the once brass hinges were now red.

After some internet research we opted to try a method recommended by This Old House. I have to admit I was a little skeptical at first, and if it had not come from such a reliable source I may not have tried it.

Here is a review of how we removed the red paint. We began with her large 6 quart slow-cooker and used a slow-cooker liner (Reynolds brand). We filled it half full with water and a cap full of laundry detergent (All brand).  We placed two hinges and the twelve screws in the pot and set it on high for eight hours and headed out for a day of sight-seeing. When we returned we were able to use a toothbrush and scrub the paint off.

We took a break part way through for dinner, so when we came back to finish we just turned the cooker back on and went back to scrubbing. If the paint did not all come off in the first attempt we placed it back in the water while we worked on the other pieces. We found that as the pieces cooled the paint re-stuck. Keeping the pieces hot was the key.

Dawn of Our Country #12

Dawn%20of%20Our%20Country%20All-thumbOur Heritage Frontier is my favorite merit badge frontier. As I have gotten older, I have fallen in love with history. As a student (even in college) I hated it. Now as a home school mom, and getting to teach history with good history books, I really enjoy it. I have learned so much teaching the kids history.

Dawn of Our Country is a great merit badge. It looks at the formation of the great county that we live in. Part of that history is the historic symbolism found in everyday objects such as our currency. Optional requirement number twelve looks at the back of a one-dollar and two-dollar bill. If you have an Explorer working on this requirement, the print-out below should help.  It provides images for them to look at along with lines for them to write on so they can easily turn their work in to their unit leader.

Kale chips, not just for health nuts.

Do you like Kale chips? Have you even tried them?

Recently I have been trying to eat a little healthier. Don’t worry, I am not turning into some crazy health nut. I recently discovered kale. Until about six or seven month ago, I had never eaten kale. Now, my kids can not get enough of it.  Our favorite, and the only way I’ve really tried it, it baked into kale chips.

When baked in the oven for about 20 minutes they lose their bitterness and create a wonderfully salty snack with a unique texture. And they contain tons of nutrients.

One Fish, Two Fish…

I know I have been awol lately. I just can’t seem to get in the grove of life.

But I do have a project to share with you.

Fish

The pattern is another one from Stana’s Critters. You may remember the Teddy Blanket and the Puppy Blanket that I made using her patterns. For this project you will need two different colors of yarn.

If you would like more info on this cute fish, the pattern is available here.

Home Care and Repair #17

Over spring break I spent time working around the house. The home we purchased is about 25 years old. It was owned by a lovely sweet older couple. They were in their eighties and sold this house to move into a retirement center closer to their kids. While the house is in great shape, Grandma loved wallpaper. I think I will be spending the next 3 years un-doing it.  One of the “joys” of owning a home is there is always something to do!

Home%20Care%20&%20Repair%20All-thumbOnto todays AHG related post… With all the work I am doing around the house I thought I would share Home Care and Repair Requirement #17. I am happy to say that I do my share of the work around the house, and I am not referring to just cooking and cleaning. The Home Care and Repair merit badges is a Stars and Stripes required badge. It prepares girls for future home-ownership. Requirement #17 focus on energy conservation and the principles they can use today and in the future. It works if you live in an apartment, rent or own a house. Besides the positive impact on the environment, saving energy will save  you money and we all can appreciate lower energy bills.
